The Otamatone musical toy "sings" the notes of a tune, similar to that of a human voice. Cleverly shaped as a musical note, it consists of a touch sensitive stem that gives you the notes and vibrato function. To play, touch and slide your fingers up and down the stem and create the ultimate waaah waaah effect by squeezing the cheeks of the face at the base of the note.

Designed as one of the musical instruments of the Japanese Maywa Denki Voice Project, the Otamatone was developed for a special exhibition to see whether machines sing like a human being. One could say - "only in Japan" but this crazy instrument is going to prove a bizarre yet popular gift for households all over. Simple to play and great fun - no previous musical experience is required. Dare we say it's just a bit of fun and not really meant for the seriously minded musician although, if early 70s Kraut rock bands like Kraftwerk could make a fortune out of inventing their own instruments and influencing electronic music, then what's stopping anyone from reaching the dizzying heights of musical stardom with the Otamatone.

After all, this singing instrument does have musical atttributes such as three octave settings which can be changed with a flick of a switch, although you can play a complete tune in just one octave range. Plus, it has two volume settings, just in case you infuriate the neighbours by attempting to finger "Stairway to Heaven" or "Smoke on the Water". Remember, it's not a guitar, it's an electronic crazy sounding "singing Toy". In fact with a little "practice" you'll be "play" your favourite tunes in no time.
