What are Flyer and Operator IDs and Do I Need One?

Drones aren’t all just fun and games. The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has provided guidance and services to make sure everyone who flies a drone cannot hurt themselves or the people around them. Below is a chart we have made to explain whether you need a Flyer or Operator ID. 

(Don’t worry, above we’ve labelled any drones that require either ID.)

How to get a Flyer ID

You must pass the CAA’s official online theory test. There is no age limit. Children and adults must pass the test. Children under 13 must be with a parent or guardian when they take the test and register. 

The flyer ID will last for 5 years, after which it needs to be renewed.

How to get an Operator ID

You must be over 18 years old to register as an operator on the CAA’s website. If you’re under 18, you have to ask a parent or guardian to register. 

You must label your Operator ID on every drone or model aircraft you’re responsible for. And, you can use the same Operator ID for all your drones and model aircraft.

You must renew your operator ID every year.

What is the Best Beginner Drone?

The best beginner drone is one you can fly without fear of making mistakes. Erring is how you learn, of course. Because of this, we would recommend one of the cheaper and more durable drones such as the Raven FPV. 

However, if you’re a little more confident, the FPV 110 is definitely the next drone you should upgrade to. With noticeably better quality and heft, it is certainly worth its price.

What Drone Should I Buy?

Every drone is different. If you need a higher-end (but still budget) filming drone, the FX110 is a great option. However, the FX70 and FX90 are also great filming drones. If you just want to fly, the FX50 has a flight time that’ll keep up with you no matter how long you want to stay outside.

Are Cheap Drones Worth It?

Cheap drones are definitely worth it. Not only do they help save costs, especially if you’re not a professional drone flyer or a professional film-maker, but they also give you an affordable entry into a great hobby.
